Why is EPA-Certified PTAC recycling important?
Section 608 of the Clean Air Act prohibits you from intentionally venting ozone-depleting refrigerants (such as CFCs and HCFCs) and their substitutes (such as HFCs) while you maintain, service, repair, or dispose of your hotel’s old air conditioners.
The EPA does responds to tips and perform random inspections, and get this: They may award a finder’s fee of up to $10,000 to the person who reports a violation!
If the EPA determines that you have not recycled PTACs properly and have thus intentionally released refrigerant into the environment, then they can assess fines of up to $37,500 per day for any violation.
